President's Future Leaders in Research

President’s Future Leaders in Research (PFLR) is a designation given to a select number of incoming freshmen which allows them to take advantage of matching for a mentored research experience.  PFLR students can opt to take part in faculty-mentored research in any of the 75 programs of study that are offered at LSU.  Engaging in research from as early as your freshman year will provide a firm foundation on which to build future success.   No matter your major, a PFLR designee can participate in a faculty-mentored research experience!

PFLR students are paid for their time working with faculty from their President's Student Aid (PSA) funding, and recipients can earn up to $1,550 each academic year in wages.  PSA is available for no more than eight semesters (fall and spring semesters only).   Students can work up to 20 hours per week, though most work 5-10 hours per week depending on their course schedules.

There is no application for PFLR.  Students selected for PFLR will be contacted the summer before their freshman year.

The Process

  • Students are considered for PFLR when they apply for admittance to LSU.
  • Entering freshmen students eligible for PFLR will be notified by late June.  Within that email, you will find two important links:
    • A short survey to indicate your interest in the PFLR scholarship program
    • A link to this webpage
  • The PFLR scholarship is administered by the LSU Office of Undergraduate Research (LSU OUR).  Communication about PFLR will come from LSU OUR staff via the PFLR email address pflr@lsu.edu .

  • In order to use your PFLR funding, you must accept the funding called President's Student Aid (PSA) in myLSU under "Financial Aid".

  • In the summer before your first fall semester at LSU, you will be contacted by the staff at the LSU Office of Undergraduate Research via email to start the mentor matching process.  Make sure to read that email!
    • Students will be given a few options for matching with a faculty mentor:
      • 1) Send us the name of a professor you would like to work with and we will contact them to set up the match.
      • 2) Send us your intended major or general area of interest (math, art, business, etc) and we will recommend 3 faculty to you.  Let us know which one you like and we will set up the match.
    • To view the mentors, click here to access the mentor database.  An LSU login is required.
    • There’s no rush for matching so you can decide either during the summer or wait until you arrive at LSU in the fall.
  • During the summer, the LSU Office of Undergraduate Research (LSU OUR) will host a table at each Information Fair held during the Bengal Bound Freshmen Orientations.  Feel free to stop by our table and ask questions!
  • During LSU Welcome Week, LSU OUR will host a meet and greet with LSU research faculty and our Research Ambassadors.  We encourage you to stop by to chat with faculty and research students to learn more about faculty-mentored research experiences at LSU.
  • At any point in time, you are welcome to contact us at pflr@lsu.edu with questions or concerns.

  • After a PFLR student is matched, they will meet with their faculty mentor (once they arrive on campus in the Fall) to discuss a work schedule, training, and tasks.  You will be taught everything you need to know on the job.
  • Students will submit their weekly hours in the WorkDay system, and be paid bi-weekly via direct deposit.  WorkDay can be accessed through myLSU.

  • All PFLR students must complete the following annual LSU employee trainings within the first month of the fall semester each calendar year (time spent on these should be added to your timesheet).  Certificates of completion should be emailed to pflr@lsu.edu . 
    • Cybersecurity Awareness Training (to be taken in the first year only)
    • Louisiana Code of Governmental Ethics Training (must be taken each year)
    • Power-based Violence Prevention & Response Training (must be taken each year)
    • Digital Resource and Content Accessibility Awareness Training (must be taken each year)

  • Research training (time spent on these should be added to your timesheet). 
    • In addition to any trainings assigned by your faculty mentor, PFLR students are expected to complete the CITI Responsible Conduct in Research Training online module.  This training can be accessed here: https://www.lsu.edu/research/compliance/training/responsible_conduct_in_research.php
      • There are 7 training options within CITI.  Choose whichever is most closely related to your faculty mentor’s area of research.  If  you’re not sure which to choose, ask your faculty mentor.
      • Certificates of completion for CITI should be emailed to pflr@lsu.edu
    • PFLR students are also encouraged to take any relevant workshops offered by LSU OUR.  See workshop schedule here: https://lsu.edu/discover/events/workshops.php

Students must remain full-time (12 hours) throughout the semester to retain their President's Student Aid.  Students who fail to meet the 2.0 GPA requirement at the end of the spring semester will be unable earn further funding until a 2.0 cumulative GPA has been regained.

There is no application for PFLR.  Students are considered for the funding and program when they apply to the university as incoming freshmen.  If you qualify for PFLR, our office will contact you the summer before you start as a Freshmen at LSU.

PFLR is offered to incoming freshmen students selected by the scholarship committee in the Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships.  To determine if you were offered PFLR, look for an email from pflr@lsu.edu 

Undergraduate research refers to any activity in which an undergraduate student works alongside a faculty member (professor) on a research or creative project.

LSU professors and LSU research professionals can serve as mentors to PFLR students.  PFLR students will be given opportunities to meet potential mentors and given suggestions for mentors.

Each research experience is unique so we cannot give you exact details but all students will be given on the job training.  Students are encouraged to discuss work details with their mentors before their first day of work.

None!  This experience is considered an entry-level position in research.

This is up to you and your mentor.  Students typically work 5-10 hours a week; and no student may work more than 20 hours/week.

Yes, if you decide that you would like to pursue another area of research, let us know and we can help you find a new mentor.

Students can be paid $7.25- $15/hour and are paid bi-weekly via direct deposit.  We recommend that research students be paid no less than $12/hour.

You will set your work schedule with your faculty mentor.

You can engage your PFLR scholarship at any point during your time as an undergraduate at LSU (except summers).  Just email us when you’re ready to get started.

Need time off to study abroad, do an internship, or just have a very hard semester of courses planned?  You do not need to participate in PFLR each semester in order to remain eligible.

No, President's Student Aid cannot be used during the summer.  Students interested in summer funding, should check out opportunities on the LSU Office of Undergraduate Research website.

The LSU Office of Undergraduate Research (LSU OUR) offers resources and guidance to any undergraduate student at LSU interested in undergraduate research. 

Please contact the Student Employment Partner in your department for assistance onboarding your PFLR student into Workday. Students must be loaded into Workday the same as a President’s Student Aid (PSA) student. The costing allocation will be the department’s PSA account number. There is a Workday guide available here.

Supervisors must approve student’s hours in Workday. Once a student enters and submits their time in Workday, it will automatically route to their supervisor’s Workday inbox for approval.
